It’s another lovely day, and yet another pre workout that needs reviewing.
Last time we talked about one of the strongest pre workouts I’ve taken. Today, we are going to the other end of the spectrum to talk about one of the tamer pre workouts.
Now hold your horses! Just because it is more on the mild side does not mean it is a bad pre workout by any means!
The Essential Amino Energy drink is still an ideal companion to provide you with liveliness, and an appealing characteristic is that it doesn’t strictly have to be used as a pre workout.

Remember, life is like a train. There are many stops along your journey. Different places to get off and relax or meet new people, but when the whistle blows, it’s back on the train. Sometimes you may get derailed or make a wrong turn. It might be difficult, but you can and you will get that train back on track. Don’t allow the unexpected to discourage you, as it is just a part of the journey.

Essential Amino Energy was developed by the company Optimum Nutrition. They are up there with being one of the most well-known and reputable supplement companies in all the land.
Optimum Nutrition that has been around since 1986, although they were originally known as Costello’s Health Distributors back in the day.
Let’s be clear of something right off the bat. This product is NOT an actual energy drink like your Redbull or Monster.
Pre workouts and energy drinks might be similar in nature (both increase energy), but the main difference is that pre workouts are formulated specifically to advance your training.
Companies typically spend years to scientifically prepare a model product to enhance everything about your workout without the great amounts of sugar in an energy drink.
Maybe one day down the road I might expand on the differences between these two energy boosters, but for now, that’s your brief disparity.
Essential Amino Energy can be used as a pre workout, which is what I assume most people use it for, but it can also be taken as a pick me up throughout your day.
A serving size is two scoops, which would be the necessary amount in order to properly be used as a pre workout.
When taking Essential Amino Energy as a pre workout, you may take anywhere from 1-3 servings, and I would recommend you take it about 20-30 minutes prior to your training. That could mean a total of 6 scoops! Lot of scoops!
If you take half a serving, or a single scoop, then this would be used as more of the pick me up I just mentioned.
Whether used as a pre workout, or a burst of anytime energy, you will want to start small and then work your way up if needed.
There’s the Flavor!
This product includes one of the best tasting pre workouts I’ve ever had the pleasure of tasting! The grape flavor is out of this world.
It honestly reminds me of grape Kool Aid. I’m not even kidding, it’s that good!
I know I’m usually a berry guy and stick to the berry flavors, but when it comes to Essential Amino Energy, grape is the way to go (at least in my opinion).
In total, there are currently 16 different flavors! That’s a lot of flavors. They include:
- Blueberry Lemonade

- Blue Raspberry
- Cotton Condy
- Cranberry Orange
- Fruit Fusion
- Grape (SO GOOD)
- Green Apple
- Iced Café Vanilla
- Lemon Lime
- Mocha Cappuccino
- Peach Lemonade
- Strawberry Lime
So many flavors! I’m sure you can find one that would stimulate your taste buds. There are just a multitude to choose from!
If you are not a big fan of grape flavored products, then guess what…go with a berry option. Plus, you can’t go wrong with lemonade flavors either. Does anybody really dislike both lemonade and berries?
This pre workout is similar to a cup of coffee in that you can take it multiple times throughout the day in order to get back on your feet.
Everybody has their own opinion, but personally, I think this pre workout does slightly give me more energy than a normal cup of coffee. Not really enough for me to complete a workout, unless I take more than a single serving, but for others this could do the trick.
This product can be used in place of your morning and afternoon coffee, and I for one would prefer Essential Amino Energy over a cup of coffee any day.
I’ll have a cup of coffee every now and then, but by no means am I a big coffee drinker.
I’m sure most of you reading this differ from me and are in fact coffee drinkers. Although, if you are like me and not a huge fan of what coffee brings to the table, then give Essential Amino Energy a try.
I recommend you use Essential Amino Energy up to three times daily if needed to boost your energy and be used as a coffee replacement.
Be sure not to consume a typical serving of both coffee and Essential Amino Energy more than 4-5 times a day total. This would be a bit too much caffeine/energy, which could be detrimental to your health if done often.
Now let’s go over the important ingredients, shall we?
- L-Arginine – Increases circulation within the body and known to help with recovery.
- L-Leucine – Facilitates muscle preservation by helping to create muscle proteins. Also, lends a hand for energy and stamina.
- Beta Alanine – Supplies the power to enhance muscle endurance, thus allowing you to train for longer periods of time.
- Citrulline – Amplifies your training and also helps in increasing your blood flow.
- L-Tyrosine – Expands your focus and your physical performance.
The energy blend within Essential Amino Energy is composed of a few different ingredients.
- Caffeine – Provides you with energy and can aid in weight loss.
- Green Tea Extract – Improves your mental alertness and thinking, while also slightly helping your athletic performance.
- Green Coffee Extract – Gives you energy and is a mood booster in some cases. Also, assists with weight loss as well as reduces blood pressure.
This product does include a solid list of many essential and non-essential amino acids. Amino acids are the building blocks of protein. They are exceptional for recovery, transport and store nutrients in your body, and are also sources of energy.
However, if you were hoping to primarily use it as a BCAA (Branched Chain Amino Acid – helps stimulate the process of protein synthesis) supplement, then be forewarned, as there are not enough BCAA’s included to be used strictly for this purpose.
In My Mind
I do enjoy this pre workout, but it is not quite my dish of choice as you may have already guessed. That’s not to say that I dislike it, but it’s just not for me. Let me explain.
I have been working out for 8+ years and taken a good deal of pre workouts over this time. At this point in my training, I wouldn’t go back to the Essential Amino Energy drink for a pre workout.
On the flip side, this might just be right up your alley if you’re new to the exercise game. I know many beginners who started with this and loved it as an introduction to pre workouts. I know I did!
I even have a good friend of mine who played football in high school and university, been working out for as long as I have, and this is actually the pre workout that he uses whenever he hits the gym.
My wife has also used this pre workout multiple times in the past and it works perfectly for her.
It’s funny how it works for both of them even though they are completely different in every way. But that’s the beauty of pre workouts! They affect each and every one of us in distinct ways, which is what I’ve been saying all along.
So who knows, maybe you’re an athlete and been working out your entire life, and your go to is the Essential Amino Energy pre workout!
This product does provide me energy, but just not quite enough to push my own training to the next level.
I would instead take this as more of a pick me up. Similar to a cup of coffee, but as I said, I prefer this over a cup of coffee.
Another feature to make note of is that you will not nearly feel as jittery when taking Essential Amino Energy. There are a lot of pre workouts that may cause the sensation of tingling or jitteriness, but this product most likely will not. If it does, then this feeling would be mild compared to other products.
There are some people who absolutely dislike this feeling, and if you are one of said people, then this pre workout might be best for you.
I for one embrace this sensation. If I don’t get the tingling reaction, then I know that this pre workout and I, unfortunately, may not be compatible.
Also, be aware that the jittery feeling could be a result of taking your pre workout on an empty stomach. This is no good, and could make you feel sick, so don’t do it!
Essential Amino Energy is an all around pick me up type of product. It can be used as a pre workout, but it can also be used as an energy booster (similar to a cup of coffee) multiple times throughout the day.
There are so many great flavors to choose from, which can be both a pro and a con. That’s because I know you will find something you enjoy, but the decision of what flavor to try first might be a toughie!
Onward to the negative!
The majority opinion is that this pre workout isn’t immensely strong. It may do the job, but don’t expect it to rock your world and blast you off to the moon.
In the End
The Essential Amino Energy drink is yet another choice to be introduced into the world of preworkouts.
If you just simply need a jolt of energy to get you through a long day, then this product has got you covered.
It’s favorable in my mind knowing that this product can be used as a substitute for coffee.
